The Felting Process
‘Felt' is the most ancient method of making fabric and dates back to Neolithic times. It is simply ‘matted fleece’. It has no grain or weave and does not fray when cut.
Making felt simply requires fleece, moisture and agitation. There is no stitching, glues or machines.
The video below shows the process -
the fleece is usually sheep fibre, washed and combed and perhaps dyed. It’s laid out in perpendicular layers to which other fibres and/or fabrics may be added.
once the layout is complete, moisture is added, the work covered with plastic and then …
agitated by rubbing, rolling, then when fibres are partially matted, the work is gently tossed and massaged to become firm.
