Creative expression has always been part of my life. Playing with mum’s fabrics as a child instilled a lifelong passion for textiles, colour and texture.
A sea-change from a busy professional life in hometown, Melbourne to the central north coast of Tasmania in 2007 allowed me to return to art as my creative expression.
This gave me the opportunity to explore the medium of wet felting. This seemed to bring together my passion and many of the mediums I’ve previously worked in: pottery, painting, mixed media, mosaic, garment construction and other textile-based crafts.
Felting is an ancient and elementary technique that pre-dates any other method of making fabric.
Felt is made from fleece, often with the addition of fine silk fabrics and other fibres or specialized papers. It is shaped and formed by the addition of water and a great deal of physical energy. It’s then agitated into firm robust works of original and unique sculptural, visual and wearable art.
I love the dynamic nature that sees a piece create itself into what it will become: I’m just the hands. No item is ever the same. Therein lies the magic for me.
To work in such a simple medium and produce contemporary, relevant, exciting yet beautiful works touches a basic simplicity which I love.
My work is deeply inspired by Nature. In particular that which is Tasmania: its colours, textures, forms, shapes and the interplay one with the other. Other inspirations come from the Japanese aesthetic, archaeology, geology, architecture, landscape. These resonances and echoes are of passions, places and stories from my life …. memories or imprints that remain throughout the passage of time.
Making art reveals the obscure realms of myself that lie dormant, unexpressed perhaps; but with a bursting desire to come into form. I’m constantly amazed and fascinated as the journey continues.
